 HARD DECISIONS FOR ADUR!

Despite our best efforts, Adur District Council still have to find around £1.2 million of savings year on year, if we are to cope with the expected cuts in allowances from central government tackling the nations debt problems.  While massive savings have already been made, it becomes more difficult as time goes on to find those "extra" little savings that will help us meet the new savings targets.

Rest assured that your local Councillors will continue to do their best to retain and improve key services to our community

 M.P & LOCAL COUNCILLORS RE-ELECTED

M.P. Tim Loughton, Councillors Brian Boggis (Peverel Ward) and David Simmons (Cokeham Ward) would like to give their sincere thanks to all of those who supported their re-election in the May 2010 elections.  Councillor David Simmons said "It is an honour to once again be asked to represent local people and their needs. I will work tirelessly during the next four years at both Adur District Council and West Sussex County Council to ensure local people get the best possible services in what will be difficult financial times."

 SIR ROBERT WOODARD ACADEMY

Following a meeting between M.P. Tim Loughton, Councillors Angie Mills and David Simmons with concerned residents, a public meeting was held on Monday 2nd November to discuss school site developments.  I am pleased to tell you that as a result of the debate and previous intervention by your local Councillors, the following was agreed:
  • Remove the proposals for a school access from Abbey Road

  • Cancel the proposal for a 50 foot tall wind turbine on site

  • Alter the traffic proposals for Upper Boundstone Lane and remove the yellow lines from the Eastern side of the road

  • Landscape the front of the building to minimise the impact of the new buildings

  • Place earth ramparts or some similar noise baffles around the multi-use games area to minimise disruption to local residents

Finally the ID card scheme is scrapped

The new coalition government makes a stand!

Common sense finally prevails, with ID cards and Home Improvement Packs going into the financial WPB following the general election making huge savings for the economy and less grief for people selling their houses.  However, there is more to do.  We still enjoy (if that is the right word) the legacy of the last Labour administration which gave us digital TV and Radio (when no-one wants it) and so called SMART meters.  I will be looking with interest to the way in which the new coalition approaches these and other challenges

A REMINDER ABOUT SMART METERS to control our homes from a distance!

This latest push, to turn our freezers, fridges, heating etc. on and off from a distance and without our consent, is yet another invasion of privacy and personal choice of everyone in this country. This once again smacks of communistic controls on the public without consultation, and without the knowledge that would be required to ensure our most vulnerable people do not lose out.

It is up to the new government to halt and reverse the constant erosion of our liberties to the demands of an ever increasing state which is our legacy from Labour.

Councillor David J. Simmons

Lowest settlement of any county in the country - FACT!

That is exactly what the Labour government did for the eighth year in succession.  While West Sussex receives £121 per year for each resident, the national AVERAGE is over £200 per resident, with some of the London Boroughs receiving over £700 per year for each resident. Even the national average would have enabled West Sussex to reduce its council tax by over 16%. As a result, some huge decisions have to be made as to how to save over £50 million over the next two years.

As a local Councillor, I will continue to work tirelessly to endeavour to provide quality services to the people of West Sussex in general and my own division in particular. I would be pleased to receive comments from you in order to properly represent your views in maintaining and developing services while still balancing the West Sussex budgets.

The new government needs to look at the formula for funding as a matter of some priority to meet the needs of people in West Sussex

Removing a Civic Presence from Adur?  Not on offer!

Media hype suggested this week that a decision had been made to sell off the Adur Civic Centre.  The reality is that in pursuing our ambition to reduce our expenditure and slim down our council for the benefit of local taxpayers, we are seeking to move towards only two main council buildings for Adur and Worthing from the current three.  However, what is not up for offer, is to remove the civic presence from Adur.  Your Councillors have rejected the recommendations made to sell off the Civic Centre and will be working with officers to find the best way forward in continuing to make savings in order to keep council taxes down while still providing quality services to all our residents.

So far, savings approaching £2 million a year have been made between Adur and Worthing Councils, helping to keep Council Tax rises to a minimum, but maintaining our quality services.
