Conservatives in Lewes and South East region, followed by student
politics at Warwick and Cambridge and was then closely involved with
Wandsworth Council during his time in London. He first stood for
Parliament in April 1992 against David Blunkett in Sheffield
Brightside, narrowly losing on polling day by 22,681 votes (down
from 24,191!).

West Sussex constituency of East Worthing & Shoreham with a majority
of 5,098 increased to 6,139 in 2001. He became a founding member of
the House of Commons Environmental Audit Select Committee.
After a period as PPS to Shadow Chancellor Francis Maude, he was
promoted to the front bench environment team in February 2000 with
responsibility for regeneration, the regions and housing. In
September 2001 he was made a Shadow Health Minister with mental
health, social services and children's health as part of his brief,
and since November 2003, he has been Shadow Minister for Children.
Campaigns
Since his
re-election to Parliament in 2001, Tim has been working vigorously
to fulfil his election pledges.
- To lobby the government over the disastrous implications of the
local government finance settlement for West Sussex on the provision
of local services and secure a fair share for the people of Adur and
Worthing.
- To safeguard the rights of local people which are seriously
threatened by the Government’s proposals for Regional Assemblies
which he wants to scrap.
- To protect our green fields from further over-development. Tim
fought tooth and nail against the Government’s plans to impose over
46,000 new homes on West Sussex up until 2016. He will continue to
work with local residents to oppose the unacceptable overdevelopment
of green field sites bordering on the Downs especially.
- To lobby the Government over police funding for West Sussex and to
put more police back on the streets to fight the battle against
rising crime.
- To fight for increased investment to meet the transport
implications of the Government’s housing proposals and to improve
the service for rail and bus users in Sussex and secure a
Lancing/Worthing bypass at long last.
- To improve further our high quality local schools in Adur and
Worthing by targeting funding directly at teaching and not at
bureaucracy.
- To get the Government to take up Conservative proposals to give
more powers to local people to reject the siting of TETRA and other
mobile phone masts close to residential areas.
- Working with our young citizens to improve facilities for young
people and through the ‘Making Worthing Worth It’ project in
Worthing especially giving young people a voice over local
developments at town hall level.
